Joanie Mitchell

Merrymeeting Mittens

Felted Wool

About:

My start in making felted wool mittens began when I made mittens for all my extended family members for Christmas one year. I received many compliments and orders for more. I like the challenge of combining the colors and textures of the diverse patterns, and in a world of throw away plastics and overflowing landfills, I am proud to be repurposing a natural fiber close to my farm roots.

Artist Statement:

I make mittens from gently used 100% wool sweaters by first washing and felting the wool then cutting out and sewing the mittens. The mittens are lined with high quality fleece, or cashmere when available. I may use parts of up to four sweaters to create one pair of mittens. I add a decorative button to the cuff, some of which have come from the button box that my mother handed down to me. She knew the value of repurposing and saved every button from worn out clothing. I adjust my pattern to accommodate various sized hands. I enjoy working with the diverse color patterns as well as the texture of the various wools to create a product both pleasing to the eye and functional. I have also custom made mittens for people that brought me their favorite sweater from a departed loved one, which adds great sentimental value to the mittens.
